The Hammond XK-3

Checked out by Patrick Myles, 2005

I played this new model with the older models in mind and the respective equivalent competing brands on the market.  Initially I found myself playing with presets using the lower reverse colour keys. I noticed straight away, the sound had more of a real warmth to it whereas many other products which digitally emulate the Hammond sound have a very distinctive modern/clean sound to them which to give credit is not necessarily a bad thing. The XK3 however gives through the use of its valve pre-amp much more of that old style warmth to it rather like comparing a valve guitar to a transistor model.

After enjoying the warm meaty sound, I thought I should pull my fingers from the keys and experiment with the functions within. I was quite astounded as to flexibility of the organ by way of usage and the amount of variables open to change. Above and beyond the usual features like changing the characteristics of the Leslie, there are also many other “tweekable” functions which will I am sure would give satisfaction to any muso especially those with an engineering nature about them!
