The history of Makin Organs began in 1970 when John Makin Pilling acquired part of Compton Organs Ltd, the famous pipe and electronic organ builder. John Compton pioneered the original research into the electronic production of organ tones in the 1920’s. Since then Makin have built a solid reputation for building organs of the highest quality with a special emphasis on large custom-made instruments. Makin place great emphasis on utilising the very latest of technology. In the 1970’s the Compton electrostatic mechanical generator system was replaced by a new revolutionary analogue design which made the electronic organ an acceptable alternative to a pipe organ. In the 1980’s, Makin integrated the ‘Bradford System’ of digital synthesis and then progressed to digital sampling in the 1990’s. Over this time, John Pilling struck up a friendship with Gert van de Weerd, President of Johannus Orgelbouw in Holland. Through this friendship, Makin and Johannus began working together in researching a real-time digital sampling system. Both companies retained their individual identities, but brought their own expertise to the relationship. With the passing of John Pilling, the logical step was to formalise this alliance by Makin Organs becoming a partner of Johannus Orgelbouw. This has proved to be a beneficial move. By combining operations, skills and techniques, both companies and their customers would see major benefits. Makin Organs still retains their original philosophy of a ‘Reputation of Excellence’ and still builds organs that produce their unrivalled English Cathedral sound.
